Beating the Bounds

Moving forward into past journeys: A series of representational walks based on The Diary of William Bull [b1755 -d1817] and The Diary of Reverend Henry Turnbull  [b1836 – d1901]

William Bull’s monograph describes the landscape’s he encountered between January 1785 and February 1786 and relate to the many excursions he took to visit his friend’s homes within a [roughly] 25 mile radius of his own house; his writing’s try to predict the time of his arrival by the passage of the sun – thus beginning his lifelong interest in ‘this most celestial of orbs’ [see ‘Prism’ on this site].

The Reverend Henry Turnbull was born in Suffolk [edit], accepted into the church in 1855 and lived in East London. He walked extensively throughout his parish and the wider landscape during a time of considerable social upheaval.
